Health Wagon: Health Wagon started its mission in 1980, navigating Appalachia’s challenging terrain in a humble Volkswagen Beetle. This modest beginning, initiated by Sister Bernie Kenny, has evolved into a pioneering force in rural healthcare innovation, serving as a comprehensive network for Virginia's underserved communities. Nearly four decades later, it is a model for healthcare delivery in rural America. The evolution from a mobile clinic to a sophisticated healthcare system includes two fixed clinics, four mobile units, a full-service pharmacy, and an advanced dental facility. By 2024, the St. Mary's Health Wagon facilitated nearly 29,000 patient encounters, underscoring its critical role as a safety net for southwestern Virginia’s most vulnerable populations. This organization operates in a region that exemplifies the stark healthcare disparities in the United States. In Virginia, the difference in life expectancy between affluent Northern Virginia and the Appalachian areas can be as much as ten years, reflecting disparities in health outcomes like chronic disease rates and preventive care access. The Health Wagon has been at the forefront of several innovative health initiatives.
